I think of my best friend, Carla. We’ve been friends since 7th grade, best friends since college. We hardly see each other anymore. Our lives, like most, are so busy with family, job, every day things. But our friendship is strong because we each know the other is there, and will always be “there.” Every so often, we send a text just to say hi. I need a ride somewhere because my stupid car broke down…again. I know I can call Carla. Carla needs someone to take her kid to work. She texts me, I’m there.
Yes, we’ve been there for the big things – the birth of our kids, our weddings, the death of our parents. We celebrated and supported each other for those life events. That’s expected of a friend…and in particular, of a best friend.
While we do get together for holidays like Memorial Day, 4th of July and New Years, we also gather to watch Bears games as well. Those can be big or little things. The little things though, like understanding that we operate on a BYO/potluck system at these gatherings shore up the friendship so no one person feels the burden of feeding the masses count for a lot. Little nuances in our communication with each other are actually huge.
It is the little things in a friendship that make it a big thing – a thing worth celebrating. That’s what I thought of as I was designing this meme. I made confetti to celebrate friendship. I chose a blue background for the first part because it made me think of a “true blue friend.” But the “million little things” in a relationship come from all over, so they needed to have their own colors.
Make sure to celebrate the million things that make your friendship a big thing. Please share about your friendships and the million little things that make them big in the comments below.
